Isn’t it odd that when the hardest thing to write about is yourself?
When I sat here trying to figure out what it is that I want my readers to know and understand about me, I was stumped. How do I sum myself up? And then I realized, that alone says a lot about me, so I might as well start there. I don’t like to be boxed in. I thrive on being dynamic and I generally always want more. Of what? That I don’t always know. But I feel like I am always searching for something, and that drives a lot of what makes me who I am.
I’m a planner and a goal-setter by nature. When I get an idea in my head, I run with it right away. Some may say this is impulsive, but I say it’s ambitious. The difficulty here is that I don’t always stick to my ideas or interests for very long. It’s not because I’m a quitter. It’s not because I don’t care or I’m flighty. It’s because there are so many incredible experiences this life has to offer, that I often find myself falling in love with something new. My passions are always changing, always growing. Learning piano, playing tennis, the humanities, reading, blogging, knitting, crocheting, history, quilting, writing a novel, sewing, reading, oil painting, learning a language, traveling the world, reading, writing a second novel, learning guitar, baking, needlepoint, creating a business plan for a new venture, reading. Professionally, I stay in the same general line of work, but I have changed roles several times, searching for the one that “fits”. It’s always a new flavor of the week or the month or the year, no matter what aspect of life. There always has to be something more.
You might notice that there is one common thread there that never changes: the written word. It’s always been about consuming others’ words or putting words on paper for me. Probably in part because I am constantly putting my foot in my mouth, blurting things out before thinking, slightly socially-awkward in certain situations. But you give me a moment to think and some pen and paper… that is where I am at home.
You could say that I am a bit wanderlust in life. That would be true. But with writing being my constant, I finally realized that I needed more of it in my every day. Writing centers me, it grounds me. It gives me a way that I can pull all of the nomadic pieces of me together and allows me to make something purposeful out of my wandering passions. This crazy world has so much to offer, and it is okay to want to belong (even if temporarily) to many parts of it. Continuing to learn and to grow and to explore is what makes life beautiful. You don’t always need to know where you’re going or why. Just keep going.
So stay with me a while as I navigate this life uncharted.
